Our Frosthaven adventure just took another twist. Kind in the style of…. Pirates of Caribbean! Well, that what happens when you open the wrong bottle or are too curious and unlock some old, mysterious scroll. Then the Pirates ship, full of Wraiths, will arrive at your doorsteps and will wreak chaos and terror within the vicinity.

But we would not be so reckless to bring it on us? Wouldn’t we?… Ekhm… We love new adventures and oftentimes fancy venturing into most unhabitable places. Sometimes we will find glimmering, intriguing artefacts. Sometimes, even with the warning of bystanders, we would touch / take them. And then we reap the consequences… Always explaining to ourselves “who might have known???”.

Ok, before we jump into the adventure description – and how / if we managed to get ourselves out of it, short reminder on our team composition. Four characters allows for a very versatile and flexible approach:

  • Frozen Fist – level 5 (me) – a guy with pretty unusual mechanics (losing health to recover cards), proves to be a decent damage dealer while also can soak up some damage.
  • Infuser – level 5 (Kuba J) – crazy mechanics with infusion, possibility to send swords as summons, strong attacks with decent health. Another damage dealer capable of taking some beating.
  • Snowdancer – level 5 (Kuba G) – crowd control and manipulation master, creates a lot of hazardous terrain and then pulls or pushes monsters. Especially useful in open terrain scenarios.
  • Drifter – level 3 (Adam) – This is super flexible character, who can heal, attack, take the beating and is no dependent on elements; very strong addition to our team.

Scenario Specifics

Below we analyze scenario, its set-up, win conditions and complexity levels:

On one hand we have only one dot below the scenario name; so it should be straightforward, not complicated. But when you look at map (see below), three decks of the ship, the need to loot crates AND come back safely and unscratched (nobody can be exhausted), this is getting a bit tricky. Also, monsters we will be facing – Wrights – are extremely unpleasant and unpredictable. Still, we need to save Frosthaven from this raid! Let us see how we dealt with that!

Session Report

Scenario #127 set-up there as three decks in the ship, connected by staircase. There are only two crates where we begin (and we need to look four of them) so we will need to get below. The reception at the top deck is very nasty…
…combination of Ice Wraiths and Ancient Artillery. The latter you know – hitting hard on significant distances. But the former type of enemy is the true nuisance. They deal a lot of damage, one has retaliate and the other shield and they can swap their forms!
I believe it took us almost two hours to clean up that first room. We again had to play it properly tactically, avoiding the artillery missiles while getting close to melee enemies. Note also that Wraiths are not purely range or melee monsters; it depends on their type – Normal or Elite. And when they change that type (there are such cards) their behavior also changes! When you just thought that this monster will charge you and you will get him on some nice retaliate, it might move back and fire in range at you!
It was not easier below deck; the problem was also the fact you need to go one by one on the staircase (it takes a lot of movement points); thus, Kuba G (Snowdancer) decided to stay at the top.
The rest entered Middle Deck and we started to hit in all direction, being aware our time is ticking away, and it might be good to start burn the cards.
To the lower deck we sent only one character – Drifter. He quickly jumped to the crate, looted it and came back.
Now we started to run for our life, in order to escape the ship. But no enemies were chasing us – the ones left below, stayed there and the new ones did not appear.

Summary

Thematically that was definitely cool scenario; a bit tedious on the upper deck – it was really hard to dispatch Artillery & Wrights combination. But the deeper we went the quicker we dealt with enemies. And after about three hours of play we victoriously escaped that haunted freighter!

More reports to come!
