This was not the regular Frosthaven mid-week meeting. Oh no, this time the decision was that we are prepared and equipped enough to try one more time #21 Realm of Endless Frost.
It happens that we need to replay some of the scenarios in our grand campaign; here or there the adventure might be so specific or simply surprising that we lose. However, that particular scenario crushed us entirely – we did not lose it, we lost it badly. To some extent it was the length of it, to some special rules (you will see below it has “three dots”), to some strength of enemies or the Hard Difficulty level we have chosen. Whatever it was, the first attempt was a calamity!
Our Frosthaven Campaign in scenario order:
Some interesting materials about Frosthaven World: Frosthaven – first look – starting characters (1/2) Frosthaven – first look – starting characters (2/2) Frosthaven – monsters' analysis & strategies – Lurkers Frosthaven – monsters' analysis & strategies – Unfettered
Importantly, in this second attempt the composition of our group was completely changed. Instead of Blinkblade, Geminate and Banner Spear we had:
- Deathwalker at level 7 (me)
- Trapper at level 5 (Kuba J)
- Coral level 5 (Kuba G)
All of those characters on definitely higher levels and with more powerful cards than in first play. Did this composition worked better – let us see!
Session report
Here is our scenario:
As you can see, this is most complex category scenario (“three dots” below the name) and one featuring Boss. We need to get rid of Prince of Frost – a very nasty figure, with 60 hit points, and specials which summon other enemies and can take cards from our hand. But we were equipped with previous experience and knowledge and were definitely willing to use it.
PS. As always, feel free to click on below images for full details.
Session report
Summary
What a relief, what a joy! Prince of Frost finally destroyed! We prepared very well for this encounter, maximizing our characters levels while not increasing the scenario level. We knew what to expect. And we decided on daring attack in room two. Having all of those precautions in place, allowed us easier than expected tackle this adventure. Now we will come back to main campaign thread and Algox problems!
See you in another session report!
Thinking of a Christmas gift for me and the boys. Gloomhaven or go straight to Frosthaven? What do you think?

If you want to choose between those two, Gloomhaven would be my choice; quicker, more straightforward, no Outpost which unfortunately is not so exciting as I wished this to be. PS. By quicker I mean both Campaign and individual scenarios. In Frosthaven this is slightly too long.

Frosthaven is more difficult(makes scenarios more interesting, many special rules) but the outpost phase can be tedious. Lots of various things to track, and even us, quite experienced forget about things, as it’s bit too much for us(we play late, little tired after work). If You want to test out the mechanics You can check Jaws of the Lion, which seems the least troublesome, easiest setup, less boring work, maybe easier for start. Gloomhaven and Frosthaven are more expensive and if the mechanics won’t suit, You may regret money spent.

As to the scenario, the 2nd room went way too fast, and for the boss we were overpowered. We also were very lucky, that in 2 early rounds boss didn’t select any special skills, which would cause more trouble. I belive Michal and Kuba would be able to kill the boss without my 3-4 trap “path of joy”, dealing way over 20 points. Since i didn’t want to risk there’ll be no room for me to do the push(boss summoned imps around itself, and i wouldn’t be able to attack), we killed the boss relatively quick. 2nd room with the orb could turn out bad, i don’t think we overkilled it, so if we didn 1 less damage and it survived my character would be forced to loose a card to negate damage, and the end game wouldn’t be that obvious.
