Another week, another Frosthaven session. Recently we decided to focus all our efforts on main Algox track, and we stick to that decision. After innovative #28 Summit Meeting and very difficult #38 The Way Forward scenarios, time has come for something, which looks like a prelude to a grand finale.
Why do we think so? Because we are supposed to gather some ancient ice (scenario #45) and ancient snow (scenario #46) in order to cleanse the curse which is affecting the Algox community. Of course, it will not be an easy task as numerous enemies will await us!
Our Frosthaven Campaign in scenario order:
Some interesting materials about Frosthaven World: Frosthaven – first look – starting characters (1/2) Frosthaven – first look – starting characters (2/2) Frosthaven – monsters' analysis & strategies – Lurkers Frosthaven – monsters' analysis & strategies – Unfettered
Our team recently made a huge leap forward, as all our characters gained new levels during last adventure. Now our versatile merry company looks like this – soon we should have first character reaching level 9!
- Deathwalker recently promoted to level 8 (me)
- Trapper recently promoted to level 6 (Kuba J)
- Coral recently promoted to level 6 (Kuba G)
Scenario
We decided to start with the Living Glacier scenario, where we had to gather ancient ice. Snow we shall collect during next session 🙂
Finally, one-dot scenario. Does that mean an easy one? No! But at least without tons of special rules which oftentimes can be very difficult to overcome or simply… tedious. The only thing which made us wonder were all those strange letters on the map which were not described during the set-up. Usually that meant something will spawn there later on… Let us see.

Session report
Summary
Sometimes I have a feeling that scenarios in Frosthaven are made artificially difficult. Yes, that was the idea – to have more challenge than in comparison to Gloomhaven. However, sometimes it is down in such crude, un-fun way – if not for special ability of my character it would be enormously difficult to win here.
Too many adventures in order to tackle them require some specific character skills or abilities. Fortunately, we have a very versatile team and manage to handle it well so far!
See you in another session report!
Another perfect example how much different Frosthaven and Gloomhaven are, also complexity and difficulty are two very different things in the new game.
In Gloomhaven scenarios were much less complex and basically any party could have a chance to pass them.
In Frosthaven some scenarios seem to require specific characters in the party, and some are almost completelly useless (like my Trap here- that was effective looter, but there wasn’t much else i could do, maybe killed 2 enemies, which isn’t great). Without Deathwalker’s teleportation system for allies Coral and my Trap would have huge problems to get through those eels(not too strong enemies, but block spaces and may stun in specific situations) and return to the starting tile(after we’ve spent lots of cards to clear initial enemies and destroy
the icy pillar, we had limmited option to move/attack).
We are quite advanced group, so usually we can handle smaller efficiency of our teammates, but i understand why some people advise to treat all unlocked classes as pool of characters we rotate for specific scenarios. In Gloomhaven You could play all classes and feel fine, in Frosthaven if You picked invalid class for a specific scenario, You may feel useless/weak.
Dots in the scenario book show complexity, and here surely is a very straightforward game – seek&destroy then return, but without Deathwalkers teleport and Corals special abilities that could utilizie water tiles it would be very painful and difficult scenario, where all characters would have problems to walk(water tiles takes 2 points of movement instead of 1) and survive numerous attacks from enemies(eels are weak , but they were numerous).
