The path of scenarios in our Frosthaven sub-campaign – Unfettered (Machines) – worked out in that way so we had a chance again to fight another BOSS! It was kind of surprising development that we get to him / that / it so quickly; but well, nobody will complain! Especially as such battles are usually epic, difficult and provide disproportionately high gains. But would it complete that campaign path – we really doubted it.

As always we start with the composition of our proficient monster-killer team. Frozen Fist and Snowdancer are already part of it for several scenarios but Infuser is kind of the new acquisition in our merry company. And he does really well – we found some incredible synergies in this adventure with Frozen Fist!

So, here is our current composition:

  • Frozen Fist – level 2 (me) – a little of tank (most HP in our group), a little of damage dealer (tons of interesting attacks), and a very mobile creature.
  • Infuser – level 3 (Kuba J) – seems like damage dealer type but with some very crazy stuff and surprising synergies we just discovered.
  • Snowdancer – level 3 (Kuba G) – first and foremost crowd control, with all its pushes and pulls; can create hazardous terrain (with each level – more of it!).

This is not the most experienced team – with average level between 2 and 3. Still, as in all games in the series, the difficulty level of scenarios auto-adjusts to how proficient group of adventurers you have. Let us see how the scenario went!

Scenario Specifics

Below we analyze scenario, its set-up, win conditions and complexity levels:

That one is definitely not a straightforward adventure – yes, win condition is so simple I even did not put the usual picture – simply, kill Lord of Chaos. But to get to it takes time. First of all, we need to go through the beam of chaotic energy, which blocks path to monster.

Then, the creature is summoning numerous additional monsters or attacks at long range, immobilizing us. So to get within the hit distance is kind of problematic – especially as it can also push us into this energy field! Well, we would need to split in order to cover all possible threat sources.

PS. As always, feel free to click on below images for full details.

Session Report

Scenario #34 set-up one room, one enemy (but there will be more). The beam of chaotic energy fills the corridor (red arrows); Lord of Chaos will be summoning the Sparks, which will appear on hexes A and B (blue arrows).
Close-up on our enemy. Nasty creature, which you cannot push or pull in any way; it oftentimes summons sparks, attacks and is incredibly vital with 105 Hit Points!
There were two things to do first and foremost. Me and Infuser had to get to the monster (using wherever possible jump) and approach it form the back (so push will not immediately land us on the beam). Secondly, the Snowdancer started to create series of hazardous terrains to channel the summoned Spark properly – or even severely wound them and kill.
The strategy started to wok. Me and Kuba J were attacking monsters, taking some beating in process and Kuba G was taking care of summons, utilizing hazardous terrain. And then… we discovered wonderful combo! Infuser put a poison and brittle on the boss, Frozen Fist used nicely prepared attack and, voila, 20 hit points are gone!
Well, the boss was really sturdy and we slowly started to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of summons. Snowdancer had to run to us to avoid their attacks and we were hoping to finally get rid of the boss before things will get critical. And than it happened…
…again! Yes, above is not a mistake, double-copied picture or something. Brittle + poison, advantage and Frozen Fist packs 24 damage into the enemy, killing it outright!
And so the scenario finished – with this disgusting, disfigured monster dead, challenge completed and zero loot. But, hey, we got another part of the Lurker Crown!

Summary

Small, crazy scenario with tons of special rules – still, proved not to be so difficult. Well, probably we would not be so happy and self-confident if not for two critical hits which combined with Brittle ability on boss resulted in true carnage. That also helped us to discover some interesting combos and interdependencies between characters.

That path of Machines we closed, getting some interesting piece of equipment (Shard form Lurkers Crown); now it is time to explore further campaign path. Already next week we shall face the elevator with multiple turrets. Hm, sounds interesting 🙂
