Yes, we did it! We have just completed the Algox sub-campaign branch of the Frosthaven adventure! This is not a small feat – it was increasingly difficult and complex challenge. Overall, 12 scenarios, some of them with such crazy goals like collecting snow / ice or dragging enemy bodies to the altar! But a proper focus, well-balanced team, and knowledge of strengths – and weaknesses – of both enemies and us, helped to prevail!

Let us see the last steps in that great achievement!

Our Frosthaven Campaign in scenario order:
Some interesting materials about Frosthaven World:
Frosthaven – first look – starting characters (1/2)
Frosthaven – first look – starting characters (2/2)
Frosthaven – monsters' analysis & strategies – Lurkers
Frosthaven – monsters' analysis & strategies – Unfettered

First, let us have a look at the merry company which accomplished such a great achievement. It has a pretty classical set-up with Damage Dealer (Deathwalker), Tank (Coral) and great, versatile support (Trapper). With such high character levels, the scenarios also have increased difficulty, but my feeling is that you gain much more from character as you progress in comparison to how level of difficulty is growing. Or maybe it is just my subjective feeling… Here they are – the magnificent three:

  • Deathwalker – level 9 (me)
  • Trapper – level 7 (Kuba J)
  • Coral – level 7 (Kuba G)

We really have fun playing with such a group!

Scenario Specifics

Let us now analyze scenario, its set-up, win conditions and complexity levels:

Once again medium-complexity scenario (two dots). The goal is to lift the curse from both groups of Algoxes. To do this we have to destroy the large crystal (will have like 80 Hit Points) but there will be interference in the process.

The Special Rules section tells us that we do not want to kill our compatriots, but we will if we have to in order to achieve the final goal. With that in mind, all damage we deal to enemies is reduced by one and we have permanent disadvantage. Not to hurt them too much 🙂 Well, that rule will be painful and will result in additional time needed to kill opponents.

Session Report

Scenario #55 set-up only two rooms but the real challenge here is not running far but dealing with sturdy, big enemies. Especially as we fancied playing it on Hard Difficulty!
Here they come – three big Guards, supported by Priest and Archer. While we cannot deal so much damage as usually, we have our ways – using traps, stun, my super level 9 attack card.
It took a lot of time to kill those enemies. As a next step we spend like 4 turns boosting our self, building super traps, spawning shadows. And then we were READY to enter the next room!
Well, that was something we could expect. Long time ago, in scenario #4 Heart of Ice we could unlock one of two characters. We decided for Snowdancer. Now, at the end of the campaign it was Frozen Fist who was waiting for us. He was dealing 12 HP (!) damage with his attack; but the real target was Crystal, so we decided to focus on this.
We were also witnesses to one of the craziest Crab-Dances in Frosthaven! Due to specific combination of cards, Kuba was able to use his Coral to perform like 7-8 small attack in turn, each time having to move 1 hex (and dancing on water was giving him advantage). Pretty bizarre but effective.
If you add to this the super trap from Trapper and usual, very heavy punches from Deathwalker shadows, within 3 turns the crystal was destroyed!
And so, it was done. Enemies killed (except for boss, we did not have to overpower him to win). Crystal shattered; the cleansing ritual performed. Algoxes again free and peaceful. Victory!
On top of this, during the Outpost phase, we unlocked another interesting side scenario. Check the previous adventure in this thread: #120 Under the Influence. Will be fun!

Summary

You play such campaign games like Frosthaven exactly for those moments. Moments of achievement, fulfilment, and satisfaction. Where you feel that all the interim steps were leading to something. We closed one of the three main campaign branches – Algoxes. All negative events connected to them were removed, a lot of prosperity added. Now we shall come back to Lurkers (we are very much advanced here) as well as Unfettered / Machines (where we just scratched the sub-campaign).

The only question is what next? Well, we know we are very close to retirements of our characters. Thus, after some discussion, we agreed on last, super-difficult scenario to gain rest for multiple of our characters.

Still, one thing does not stop to bother us. Somebody was messing with those Algoxes we just freed from the curse. Somebody / something purposefully did it – there was clear evidence for this. Now we just need to discover who / what was it….
