Into the Woods: The Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, 1862 is the eighth installment in the Great Battles of the American Civil War (GBACW) series, published by GMT Games. The series traces its roots back to Richard Berg’s legendary Terrible Swift Sword from 1976, and has remained one of the most respected regimental-level American Civil War systems in the hobby.

This entry covers one of the most dramatic and consequential battles of the Western theater – the surprise Confederate assault on Grant’s Army of the Tennessee near Pittsburg Landing, a two-day struggle that shook both sides and fundamentally shaped the war in the West.

The game uses the series’ interactive chit-pull activation mechanic, which brilliantly simulates the fog, confusion, and uneven command of 19th-century battlefield at the regimental level. The package includes ten scenarios ranging from division-level clashes on a single half-sized map to full two-map battles covering both days of fighting.
