Wargameron is a four-days board game convention held in Poland, focusing on historical, strategic, and tactical wargames. It takes place annually at the end of vacations, with the 2025 edition just concluded last weekend at the Hotel Kuźnia Napoleońska near Warsaw.

It is organized by wargamers community (special thanks to Staff Table, Piotr Bambrough, Mike Reed and Krzysztof Dytczak). The event brings together fans for gaming, tournaments, and community interaction. Attendees enjoy a large, air-conditioned gaming hall with ample tables and chairs, ensuring a comfortable experience. The convention offers affordable lodging and dining options (food is so delicious just outside the hall!), allowing participants to focus solely on gaming.

Entrance to the main Hall

Wargameron features game demonstrations (last year it was Prinicpes, this year Greedy Merchants from the Jagiellonian Trail), workshops, and opportunities to meet designers and publishers. It caters to both hardcore wargamers and casual players, with a variety of game genres available. A marketplace allows attendees to purchase games and accessories. The event fosters a vibrant community, attracting local and international participants.

Beautiful banners, they really makes the lace special

I will not deny it, this is my favorite wargaming convention in Poland, where possibility to meet great colleagues (some of them not seen for a long time), in perfect conditions (accommodation, food and place to play) in a great, well-communicated location makes this a special experience.

But these are the games which is main focus of this event, isn’t it? So let us talk about some (or rather most) of the titles I had a pleasure to play during those four, long, exhausting but terrific days!

The Games I Played

Wargameron started for me with the Kingdom of Heaven session – we played with Janek Scenario D, Third Crusade, where Saladin, Barbarossa and Richard the Lionheart. That game never disappoints and this time again gave us a lot of fun. Janek’s Muslims in the last moment avoided the Automatic Defeat (it was a very tense play) – we shall continue with the scenario already after convention.
In anticipation for our scheduled game we brought to the table The Longest Trench. I believe this game is undervalued – for the simplicity of the rules and just few components it offers very nice experience, with some, limited random factor (artillery dice). And the gameplay – the situation moved back and forth, with Central Powers almost winning, situation being saved at Verdun and Allies almost driving the opponent to surrender too. Still, game finished with Janek’s victory as CP in the very last battle of the game.
We finished the day with two light games. First of all, we played Survive – that title actually hit the table like three times during four-days convention. Perfect negative-interaction title for late night, when players are already exhausted but willing to play on. The results were of secondary importance – the fun from moving the monster and eating the raft full of the other player’s survivors – unforgettable!
The conclusion of the first day of convention was always great Charioteer from Matt Calkins. Again, perfect title for late night although – as one colleague underlined – with strategy an tactics which eluded him so far 🙂 Again, we played it several times over four days – always in large group of 6 players as this is definitely the most fun!
Fresh after wonderful breakfast, we started the second day with Michal playing Assault Sicily ’43. This game tells the story of Allied landings there in 1943. I was leading the defending Italians (see all those trenches, bunkers and mines) while Michal was landing in two waves – first he decided to push the recruits (they were massacred by my MGs) and then landed with Veterans (they finally managed to break Italian resistance). It was a true fan and we enjoyed the system.
After lunch the time has come for Red Dust Rebellion – the latest COIN published from GMT Games. It brings some novelties, like transports from Earth or Church of Reclaimer with it special deck of resources. Still, we all felt a bit like… playing just another COIN, with very similar mechanics, victory conditions, etc. Probably we need another session to give it a final score.
The evening, except for some shorter games (Charioteer & Survive) was devoted to playing & shooting video about Armed Conflict which is currently on the Gamefound. Game has a lot of interesting mechanics – like forming of alliances during play or resource limitations. Still, we believed – in order to avoid turtling and solid fronts – some additional units might help to make the game more dynamic. I know that author, Sebastian Kihlman, is working on it.
Third day and another big game – this time Total War: ROME. Those of you who heard something about this title know that it has a terrible rulebook, which leaves many things open, unexplained or vague. I had a displeasure of playing it like 10 months ago.
So why come back to it? The group of devoted fans rewritten completely the rulebook, created player aids, etc. I felt from the start the game has potential so I asked colleagues to risk and try it. I am not sure if these were our low expectations or great job done with the new rulebook – game played very nicely and we had a fun with it!
But that was not all; we did not only played the campaign but I brough the Tactical Battles expansion (which mimic what you could do in computer game) to replay in more details the clashes between armies. That was also fun!
At the end of the day Jacek invited us to a very intriguing game – a football tournament with some of the best European and Polish clubs. We started with 8 players (our largest session on this convention) with regular, league groups and than play-offs. The closer to the final, the higher emotions. In the end my weak, underdog AC Milan, thanks to saving the penalty, won the championship!
Last day of convention was devoted to a very large and beautiful game – The Chase of Bismarck. With Marcin we played for the first time and discovering interesting mechanics of this title. Definitely we will need to play it again!

Conclusions

Again, big, big thanks to Adam, Mike, Piotr and Krzysztof for organizing this fabulous event. Everything was perfect, we spent wonderful time enjoying every one moment of it. And the common grill on Friday afternoon will be long remembered!

One thing which I should probably also mention, is that if you want to keep your memories fresh from this great Con, you can do it with some cool Wargameron Merch – of course, I could not resist:

See you guys next year!
