Welcome to the short series of training materials for Undaunted: Battle of Britain; this is already fifth installment in acclaimed Undaunted series and is a standalone game, not requiring possession of previous titles. It is adapting the core gameplay of the previous games to recreate the dynamic dogfighting of aerial combat – and it does it pretty splendidly, as it quickly become one of my favorite parts of the series.

What I am presenting below is probably the best way – as it works for me – to familiarize with the game, new concepts, components, and versatility of new mechanics. I play solo thorough the scenarios (solitaire mode designed by me – pretty simple & straightforward) and explain rules on the fly. Hope you will enjoy it!

Scenario 1

Historical background: The Battle of France, 23 May 1940. The British Air forces in France supported the British Expeditionary Force and the bomber operations of the Advanced Air Striking Force. Skirmishes between RAF and Luftwaffe fighters were common. On 23 May, British squadrons surprised German Bf 109s in northern France in a contest that would result in losses for both sides.

Scenario description: a small dogfight between quality-superior Germans (four planes) and quantity-larger Allies (six planes). You learn basic mechanics of Move, Maneuver and Attack. Really, first steps into the game.

Scenario 2

Historical background: Evacuation of Dunkirk, 27 May 1940. Operation Dynamo was the code name for the evacuation of Allied soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk between 26 May and 4 June 1940. The operation began after large numbers of Belgian, British, and French troops were cut off and surrounded by German forces during the Battle of France. RAF squadrons were ordered to provide air supremacy for the Royal Navy during the evacuation. On 27 May, after carrying out heavy bombing, the Luftwaffe was met by 16 RAF squadrons. These squadrons claimed 38 kills but lost 14 aircraft.

Scenario description: a bombing run by Germans vs. Allied ships evacuating troops from Dunkirk; asymmetric goals make for an exciting and interesting play for both sides.

Scenario 3

Historical background: Battle of Britain: Nuisance Raids, 6 June 1940. Germany’s primary objective in the Battle of Britain was to compel Britain to agree to a negotiated peace settlement. The first phase of the battle was the “nuisance raids” in which the Germans flew scattered small-scale probing attacks day and night. The first raids took place on the night of 5 June, and they continued throughout June and July.

Scenario description: finally, we got Spitfires and quality disparity between Allies and Germans narrows; this is escape scenario, Stukas and Heinkel try to exit the map while RAF is planning an interception. Particularly good and interesting scenario which features also clouds.

Enjoy!
