Bayonet & Musket Battles is a GMT series that evolves the well-known Musket & Pike system by shifting the focus from shock combat to the growing dominance of battlefield firepower in early modern European warfare. The first volume, Banish All Their Fears, presents two major late-17th and early-18th century engagements that highlight this doctrinal transition. The system reflects larger army structures, where brigades become the key maneuver elements, and emphasizes the decisive role of reserves and coordinated fire. This is nicely depicted by using two types of boards: strategical and tactical.
The game features two historical scenarios: Neerwinden (1693), where King William III’s outnumbered Allied army defends fortified positions against the aggressive French forces of the Duke of Luxembourg, and Blenheim (1704), where the Duke of Marlborough leads a bold Allied advance into Bavaria to confront Franco-Bavarian forces near the Danube. Both battles showcase the increasing importance of firepower and operational flexibility, supported by streamlined combat resolution and detailed historical research in maps and orders of battle.
