I am a great admirer of Volko Ruhnke’s designs, and in particular of the Levy & Campaign system. With each new installment in the series, the close collaboration between the system’s creator and a group of young, enthusiastic designers continues to produce fresh and innovative titles. While remaining faithful to the core rules of the system, each volume typically introduces a wealth of new ideas and perspectives.
Thanks to Justin Fassino we are getting a very interesting, fifth title in the series, which brings players into the challenges of medieval logistics and maneuver across Asia Minor during the clash between Orthodox Christian (Byzantium!) and Muslim power (Seljuk Turks!) in the lead-up to the climactic Battle of Manzikert. Asymmetric victory objectives and new and unique additions to the Levy & Campaign system mean a dynamic game of cat and mouse between these two great powers. All of this in gorgeous graphical representation!
By the way, if you are interested in more detailed information about how the game was developed and why some design decisions were made, make sure to also check the interview with Justin Fassino who is author of this great title:
Enjoy!
