When Illusions of Glory was being published in 2017 I really had a high hopes for this game. Who would not have – in the end it was a spiritual successor to the great Paths of Glory. However, due to numerous issues with components, rulebook and playeraids the excitement turned into disappointment. However, GMT lived up to its reputation so now we have a fully playable, deep and interesting game thanks to this errata.
But why I was so keen to get this game and what story does it tells? It takes the system from Paths of Glory by Ted Raicer and apply it to the vast, mobile and exciting battles of the Eastern Front. The Allied Powers bring massive forces to bear against Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and Turkey while trying to prevent a game-changing revolution in Russia. The Central Powers must defeat Russia, hold off Italy, and win the upper hand in the Balkans or face demoralization and rebellion at home.
Each player will have to focus somewhere: on the dynamic war of maneuver between German-led and Russian armies; on Balkans and its vital objectives; or the conflict between Austria-Hungary and Italy. A lot of options and as always not enough resources to cover each of them.
Today I woudl liek also to present to Dear Readers the components presentation and how this game depicts World War I Eastern Front:
I hope you will enjoy it!
