Commands & Colors Tricorne: The American Revolution by Compass Games

Tricorne portrays some of the larger American Revolution battles, as well as smaller size skirmish actions. This is part of renowned and widely appreciated Commands & Colors series, which brings its own mechanics, solutions and rules to the system.

This is also game which has tons of wooden blocks – various sizes – as well as cards. However, we found a great solution for storing those pieces – the tarot-sized trays proved to perfectly match the smaller blocks and allows for great sorting and storing of them. It is not only functional, but also beautiful and elegant. And feels so great in hand, when you hold it!

Red Dust Rebellion by GMT Games

Red Dust Rebellion is volume XII of GMT Games acclaimed COIN Series, and tells the story of the Martian revolts of the 2250s and the rise of Martian nationalism. This is first time with this genre when we move in time into the future; still, the game makes sure that the story told is plausible and as much anchored in our possible civilization future as possible.

This is our headline title this month – fresh from the publisher! Currently all COIN games have pre-designed storage solutions form Cube4Me and it could not be differently with RDR. However, the approach taken here was a bit different than previously. The Tarot-sized cards again played main role – for keeping individual factions pieces, cards, etc. The tray is used only for common pieces. Works perfectly!

Port Arthur from Nuts! Publishing

Port Arthur is a vibrant, fast-moving and neat two-player naval strategy game that recreates the 1905 Russo-Japanese war at sea. Players can take on the role of Japan, aiming to amphibiously land armies in Manchuria and strike at the Imperial Russian Navy, or play as Russia, fighting far from home to prevent Japanese landings until reinforcements arrive.

Nuts! Publishing produces not only very interesting but also incredibly beautiful games. Port Arthur only confirms this observation. The storage solution – while small and not overly elaborate – helps to keep the pieces for both sides separately and allows for quick set-up.

Downfall: Conquest of the Third Reich, 1942-1945 from GMT Games (3-inch box and mounted map)

Downfall is a two-player game on the conquest of the Third Reich in World War II. Sounds typical? It should not be! The Western player commands the Western Allies faction and the OKH, that is the German and minor Axis armies battling the Soviet Union in the east (Oberkommando des Heeres). The Soviet player commands the Soviet faction and the OKW faction, that is the German and Italian armies facing the Western allies in the west (Oberkommando der Wehrmacht).

That great game deserves a proper treatment to sort & store all the chits, cards and components. Especially as it got a wonderful upgrade – a mounted map and 3-inch box. The updated and upgraded set allows for those new components to fit nicely in the box. Check it out!

The Blitzkrieg Legend: The Battle for France 1940 from MMP

The Blitzkrieg Legend simulates Case Yellow, the German offensive in May of 1940 that shocked the world. In less than a month’s time it made quick work of Belgium and Holland, shattered the armies of France, and pushed the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) into the sea at Dunkirk. This is twelfth game in the Operational Combat Series (OCS) game from Multi-Man Publishing (MMP).

MMP games are usually counter-intense (Blitzkrieg Legend has almost 2000 pieces!) and proper storage and sorting solution is key for success. With the mixture of the standard 20 compartment trays (to sort the forces) and card holders (to store the markers) we are getting set which not only fits perfectly into the box, but also is very elegant and functional.

El Rey Planeta / The Planet King from NAC Wargames

The Planet King takes 1 to 2 players into the economic, military, and diplomatic actions of the biggest European empire – the one of Philip IV, the King of Spain and Portugal since 1621. But each of other European powers has its own agenda and a series of events will try to undermine this empire. After Mr. President and I, Napoleon, this is another title in which you step into the boots of famous leader, trying to steer the flow of events hitting you during your career.

El Rey Planeta set is a combination of trays – as there are various counters and markers in the game – as well as card holders, to store and separate various decks. While the game box is pretty wide and spacious, we still had to plan it in a way that allows for easy fit inside.

Conclusion

It is encouraging to see the number of various, tailor-made Cube4Me sets for wargames growing exponentially. That truly helps with storing and sorting game components as well as is very elegant. Of course, it gives a lot of satisfaction to me and Marcin with whom we together started that journey. More to come!
