I am big fan of Chad Jensen creation – Combat Commander series. I mainly play the European version – you can see my detailed review on this – and whenever possible, advocate to other players the advantages of the system: fantastic rulebook, great replayability and what I like most – the presentation of battlefield chaos and confusion in the game mechanics.
Not having too much options for live play and eager to introduce more players to that title, I am continuing series of asynchronous games with Dave (whovian223). We finished two sessions of Caesar: Rome vs. Gaul and after short discussion, decided on CCE as next.
We use Discord for files exchange as well as for online communication – it works surprisingly well despite all those opportunity fire or hidden mines/wire rules. And let us be honest – we play for fun and are able to evaluate who and when would like to interrupt the other side. So let me invite you to as usually picture rich session report from our first game!

Fat Lipki is probably the most often played Combat Commander scenario. That introductory set-up gives a good insight to the new players what the game is about, equips each opponent with completely different set of soldiers (good trainign opportunity!) and is pretty small and short. Still, the results achieved vary as I have seen both sides – Soviets and Germans – winning this scenario. So let us see how it went!

Summary
That was real fun to play with Dave. He has good (although somewhat distant) Squad Leader experience so the entry barrier was pretty low. Our game reasonably quickly started to progress flawlessly and some rule checks / clarifications were the only interruptions. The result was of secondary importance, time good spent – top priority! We had such a blast that almost immediately started scenario 2. But I will tell about it in separate article, once we finished it! More CCE for sure!
I’m not sure if I should thank you or curse you for introducing me to my new obsession 😛
But seriously, this has been so fun and I really need to play this game live someday. Sometimes the wait for the next turn is excruciating!
I’ve had so much fun with this. Thank you.

Indeed, the game is addictive and you just want to play one more turn / one more scenario.

I can’t imagine NOT playing it live, to be honest; I’ve never tried. I need to get it back to the table… Er, um, the Vassal server, I mean. Played about 35 games with my buddy in Seattle last year (huh, wow, that’s a lot), but we’ve been playing other things lately.

Well, when you cannot play face to face, a discord channel and play via VASSAL is really great option.

Reblogged this on Dude! Take Your Turn! and commented:
Re-blogging this post from Michal at the Boardgame Chronicle because he says it much better than I ever could.
Combat Commander has become my new obsession, and Fat Lipki was my initial free taste before I fell into the whole trap.
And I’m loving it.
Enjoy this!

Huh, weird, I can’t reply directly above, but to be clear, when I say live I mean live on Vassal; I’ve never played async/PBEM, only realtime online. I’ve played CC all of once on the table, actually. (Most of the decks have never been shuffled. >_>) I would say that it’s because of COVID, but in this case it’s actually not — it’s because my war gaming friend lives in Seattle and I live in Denver).
So maybe I shouldn’t have said live — I’m not sure if that’s what Dave meant? I meant realtime, but not in person.
Anyway, my Seattle friend and I use Slack calls while we play, although I do use Discord a fair bit too with other friends. They aren’t really war gamers, though — we mostly play 18xx. Though one of them does play Commands & Colors with me sometimes. (I sent him your strategy posts a while ago to help him get started.)

I would like to give this a try live on VASSAL at some point, but I am enjoying the PBEM version that we’re playing now. When I’m working from home (like I’ve been doing since last March), I’m sitting at my computer anyway and it’s easy to bang out a turn and let Michal know that he’s up in a couple of minutes.
I wouldn’t want to be playing “live” at that time because I may get called away to a meeting or whatever, but depending on Michal’s availability, we can get a bunch of back and forth turns done in a short period of time like that.

Sure, that’s great; sound like it works pretty well for you! I generally like realtime, but admittedly it is a bit inconvenient to wait for friend’s kids to get to sleep so we don’t play until pretty late at night (I’m up late but… Time zones are not in my favor. It’s okay, really).
I really do miss playing with people at the table, though, that’s what the last year or so has really taken away (effectively I mostly have a different set of people I play with now than I did then).
Anyway, you guys have inspired me to try and play a couple games of CC again this weekend (I’d been thinking about circling back to some of the battle packs anyway, just hadn’t quite done it, need to grab the boxes and pick out the scenario cards).

Fat Lipki is one of the best (especially, but not exclusively, introductory) scenarios. Controlled aggression is the key to CC, and this shows it off with such a minimal counter density. The line between aggressive enough, and too aggressive, is higher than most players realize at first.

Very true observation!

TTS is also a great option for CC

Yes, indeed. The only draw back with TTS is that i snot so suitable for PBEM.
